People love pigeon-holes and it seems that the media has created one called ‘Alsace Specialist’, then hung our name on it. In fact we are equally pleased with all our styles, including our Chardonnay. The 1994 Martinborough Chardonnay is a round and harmonious wine, the depth and richness of which is already starting to emerge. The nose and palate show citrus and Bartlett pears, with an underlying nutty character from the extended lees contact, and soft French oak. It is very drinkable now, but if you are serious about Chardonnay there is a lot of flavour and development yet to emerge. When stored in an ideal cellar we have found our Chardonnays are drinking as a mature style from 4+ years: from warmer cellars (particularly in Auckland and northwards) they can be drunk from 2-4 years, depending on conditions.
