The dark purple colour is vibrant and shows a bright crimson edge. On the nose we see fruit characters of blueberry, cassis and cherries. The wine slowly opens up to reveal more complex aromas of cinnamon, vanilla and tobacco. Toffee and caramel notes are also subtly in the background. Maturation in large format French barrels has complemented the wine with soft oak tones, which are present in balanced proportion to ensure they are merely supportive of the wine.
The reason for bottling a part of our 35 year old Dry River Estate vineyard separately becomes more obvious on the palate. Mainly thanks to vine age, we have seen this wine consistently produce silky but powerful tannins that dominate the palate but sit under a sweet veneer of pure fruit. The underlying fruit acidity causes the mouth to salivate and provides a certain ‘order’ and linearity which assists with the length and impression of the tannins. We picked this fruit as late as possible, and could therefore use a high portion of ripe stems-55% of the fruit as whole bunches-in our fermentation vat. The result is a wine that is full bodied and well-structured, giving great drinking pleasure over time and with food. We anticipate a cellaring potential of 10 or more years in a cool cellar.
